The NPDC focuses on petroleum exploration and production in Nigeria, and has operated as a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) since its founding in 1988. As the fourth largest oil producer in Nigeria, the NPDC delivers over 600 standard cubic feet of liquid gas daily to the domestic market. Moreover, the organization currently holds 21 oil mining licenses (OMLs) and seven oil prospecting licenses (OPLs) that include deepwater sites. Distinguishing Between the Upstream and Downstream Sectors

Jamil Abubakar is an accomplished pilot and first officer who acquired both private and commercial licenses from Epic Aviation in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. A graduate of Kingston University of London and Enfield College, Jamil Abubakar has also served as the executive director of Aximites Energy since 2012. Aximites Energy is an oil and gas provider and marketing firm located in Nigeria. The company is registered with the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and Nigerian Petroleum Exchange (NipeX), and currently focuses its efforts on both the upstream and downstream sectors.

The upstream and downstream sectors of the energy industry refer to different segments of the industry’s supply chain. While the upstream sector covers the extraction and production of raw materials, the downstream sector encompasses post-production activities such as consumer distribution. Downstream companies include refiners of petroleum crude oil and natural gas processors. Alternatively, the upstream market consists of businesses such as engineering firms, drilling companies, service rig operators, and even scientists.

Distillation - The First Part of Crude Oil Refining

Oil and gas executive Jamil Abubakar is the executive director of Aximities Energy Limited. At the Lagos, Nigeria-based company, Jamil Abubakar oversees distillation and filtration processes to produce the best automotive gas oil.

Distillation is an essential part of crude oil refining. Crude oil is a mixture of different hydrocarbons, all of which have different uses. Distillation, the first stage in refinery, is where these hydrocarbons or fractions are extracted.

The process entails inputting the crude into a distillation column from where it is heated. Individual fractions boil off at different temperatures. Light products like butane and liquid petroleum gases are extracted at light temperatures. Slightly heavier products like kerosene, jet fuel, and distillate are recovered at mid-range temperatures. The heavier products like residual fuel oil are extracted at temperatures as high as 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. According to the US Energy Information Administration, a 42-gallon barrel of crude gives about 20 gallons of automotive gas, 12 gallons of distillate fuel, and four gallons of jet fuel.
